Volusia Country Hunt Club – FL

OCT282011 – OCT302011

Note to readers:
This is not a step by step, drill by drill AAR (After Action Report).
This is a review on the class coming from a “regular” civilian with no
law enforcement or military experience. I am in no way affiliated with
the Haley Strategic organization in any way other than being a student
after paying full price for the class.

Day 1 – Adaptive Handgun I

This day was focused on handgun only. No rifles were used that day and
all rifles stayed in bags or in their cars for the entire day.
Arriving at the range in pitch black, early foggy morning, we were
greeted by pterodactyl sized mosquitos that were quite a nuisance
throughout the remaining days of training. (Quick note: Bug spray eats
into kydex. Be careful about spraying bug spray all over yourself. My
Raven Concealment holster was getting eaten away by the spray)
Once all range affairs were taken care of, both instructors jumped
right in with introductions and a safety brief. Both Travis Haley and
Brannon LeBouef then jumped straight into mindset. This lecture not
only set me up for the entire training period, but for the rest of my
life. I really wish I brought a tape recorder to get every little
detail, but since every word that was coming out of them both was
riveting, it was easy to remember. Mindset is the single most
important asset you have when you’re behind the gun. Running a gun is
easy, with practice. Combat mindset is something that will never cease
to evolve. Just by attending the class does not put you in the top 1%
of shooters out there, it is how far you push your mind behind and
away from the gun.

After getting our heads straight and downing enough energy drinks, we
hit the firing line. Right off the bat we shot at a target with one
inch circles, five by five layout. This gave Travis and Brannon a
chance to get a feel for our “skill”. Being that it was a “cold bore
shot” (cold bore referring to the shooter not the gun), most shooters
were outside their one inch circles, me included. Once this was
completed by all shooters, we moved into the actual mechanics of the
handgun and our body mechanics while behind the gun. Before lunch
time, body mechanics, admin reloads, tac’ reloads, speed reloads, and
a quick down and dirty CET drill, Combat Effectiveness Test, was
performed from the three yard line to the fifty yard line.

Once the shooters were topped off with fuel, everyone was ready to
start getting rounds down range. We then moved onto the draw,
malfunctions, then another CET drill. This CET drill involved drawing
from the holster instead of the previous drill where we started from
the compressed ready. This is where I showed my weaknesses. During my
draw, I noticed my right leg kicking back and my body lower about two
inches before I fired my first shot. Travis nailed me on it right away
on it and came over and focused on me, even bracing me so I wouldn’t
move. Eliminating that movement saved me half a second between the
buzzer and the first shot being fired. I was then doing four shots
from the draw within two seconds from the three yard line to the
twenty five yard line. By this time I was finally applying mindset to
my movements. Imagining someone pulling a gun on me definitely made me
draw a little faster and make sure my hits were on target, not just
blasting rounds downrange. The “Thinkers before shooters” ideology
took on a whole new element for me during these drills, and will
forever be with me.

We ended the day with a fun timed drill. Facing away from the targets,
we were told a combination of colors. On the sound of the buzzer we
turned, hit our targets in order, ran back to the instructor and had
to make one hit on steel. This proved to be a challenge for some. Not
exactly the shooting but weapons manipulation when moving. Brannon and
Travis addressed these issues several times during this drill helping
those that were uncomfortable. Both instructors were very observant in
finding elements to improve on for each individual shooter. The timer
brought out the worst in all of us from reloads, recoil management, to
movement. After the drill we were all left with sore hands, burning
cheeks from laughing so much, and a mindset that set us up for the
days to come.

Day 2 & 3 – Adaptive Carbine I

Both days started off with the dot drill using our handguns. It was a
nice way to not only brush up on our handgun fundamentals, but to warm
up the shooters. I was already seeing improvements in my shooting
during these drills. After the handgun drills were over, we put them
away and went straight to rifles. Since this was a Carbine I class, we
would not be doing transitions. Travis pointed out that by nature some
of us go to our handguns, including me, when we go dry in our carbine.
So to eliminate that possibility we packed the handguns away to focus
mainly on carbine manipulation. Travis had a great zeroing target that
we used to zero our rifles. 98% of the class already had solid zeroes,
just needed slight adjustment, so this process was quick. The
instructors also went over the proper positioning of your body, while
prone, in order to get an accurate zero. The techniques are something
I will use every time I zero my rifles. After everyone zeroed their
rifles we started with the basics. Admin reloads, speed reloads, tac
reloads, etc. Drills went by quickly with no problems. Day 2 was
mainly carbine operation techniques including malfunctions drills.
This would later set us up for day 3 where we would incorporate moving
and shooting.

While we were not shooting while moving, we were do drills that had us
exploding to a position while bringing our carbine up on target. We
did drills such as moving forward to target, 180 degree turns, moving
in front of an obstacle (a fellow shooter in our case), and
maneuvering with other people trying to get to the same spot. All of
these drills helped tremendously with muzzle control and increased
muzzle awareness. Everything was perfectly safe. You could tell those
who were uncomfortable with the drills, but that’s what they were
there for. Throughout the class we had several contests. Mostly
accuracy based, the shooters were awarded with gifts from some of the
suppliers at the event. These contests were very significant
throughout the class because they were helping us with mindset. As the
end of the class came, everything Travis and Brannon taught about
mindset came together. Greatest finale I could even think of, I’ll
keep that a secret for those looking to attend a class with them.

Sean, the owner of the range, set up a surprise for the shooters.
After we used a beautiful Geo Metro as an obstacle, we pushed it onto
the firing line. The class coordinator was then offered to blow up the
car, accomplished by use of tannerite. After the car blew up, we were
called to the line one last time. After we went weapons hot, we lit
the bitch up! I would just like to note that this is not a part of the
Haley Strategic class curriculum. We are just lucky to have such a
great range owner.

Travis Haley and Brannon LeBouef are both amazing guys. They kept us
laughing throughout the class while getting down and dirty when the
time came. Their mindset talks will be with me forever improving. The
professionalism is something many cannot master. I can’t thank them
enough for allowing me to be a part of their class. It was a great
journey and exercise for both mind and body. Nothing a few Advils
couldn’t fix, but did make me realize that I really need to get rid of
my tactical spare tire!
